Wood vs. Gas Fire Features: Which Fuel Is Right for You?

Wood vs. Gas Outdoor Fire Features: A Side-by-Side Comparison

The campfire smell. The instant push-button flame. Both have loyal fans — and both have real trade-offs. If you're deciding between a wood-burning and a gas fire feature for your outdoor space, this guide cuts through the debate so you can choose with confidence.

Quick Comparison: Wood vs. Gas at a Glance

Factor 🪵 Wood 🔥 Gas (Propane / Natural Gas)
Fuel Type Seasoned firewood (hardwoods preferred) Propane (LP) or natural gas (NG)
Heat Feel Radiant, intense heat with variable output; flames feel "alive" Consistent, adjustable heat output; dial it up or down instantly
Ignition Kindling + lighter; takes 10–20 min to establish a good fire Push-button or match-lit ignition; flame in seconds
Cleanup Ash, embers, and soot — requires regular removal and disposal No ash or residue; wipe down glass media or lava rock occasionally
Maintenance Firebox cleaning, spark screen upkeep, chimney/draft management Annual burner inspection; check gas connections and igniter seasonally
Roasting / Cooking Excellent — real coals for s'mores, hot dogs, and campfire cooking Limited — open gas flames can be used for s'mores, but no coal bed; many gas fire bowls and tables are not designed for cooking
Portability High — no fuel lines or tanks; move it anywhere Propane: portable with a standard tank. Natural gas: fixed installation, not movable
Local Rules & HOA Wood burning is restricted or prohibited in some municipalities, fire-prone areas, and HOAs — always check before purchasing Gas fire features are permitted in most jurisdictions where open flames are allowed; verify local ordinances and any HOA rules for your property

Breaking It Down

The Case for Wood

Wood fires deliver an experience that's hard to replicate: the crackle, the aroma, and the glowing ember bed that's ideal for roasting. If gathering around a fire for cooking and classic campfire ambiance is the priority, and you're not in a burn-restricted area, a wood-burning fire pit gives you the most traditional outdoor fire experience.

Best for: Roasting enthusiasts, rural properties, buyers who love the ritual of building a fire.

The Case for Gas

Gas fire features win on convenience, cleanliness, and design flexibility. Propane models can go anywhere a tank can go. Natural gas models, once plumbed, are the most hands-off fire feature available — on in seconds, off with a turn of a valve, and zero ash to deal with. Gas also opens up a much wider range of contemporary design options, from sleek linear fire tables to sculptural fire bowls and fire-and-water combinations.

Best for: Patios with outdoor kitchens, HOA communities, anyone who wants fire at the push of a button.

Propane vs. Natural Gas — What's the Difference?

  • Propane (LP): Stored in portable tanks (typically 20 lb or larger). No gas line required. Great for standalone fire bowls, fire pits, and fire tables. Tanks need periodic refilling.
  • Natural gas (NG): Connected to your home's gas line by a licensed plumber. No tanks to swap — effectively unlimited fuel. Best for permanent, built-in fire features.

Most of our gas fire features are available in both LP and NG configurations. If you already have a natural gas line on your patio (or plan to add one), NG is the lower-maintenance long-term choice.

A Note on Local Burn Rules

Wood-burning restrictions vary significantly by region, season, and air quality index. Some municipalities ban wood burning on "Spare the Air" days; others prohibit it entirely in dense urban or fire-risk areas. HOAs may also restrict open-flame wood fires. Before purchasing a wood-burning feature, check with your local air quality management district and HOA. Gas fire features are generally subject to fewer restrictions — but we always recommend confirming with local authorities and your HOA before installation.
